Quests and clocks

Goals with objectives, owners, statuses and deadlines, plus Blades-style clocks for progress that isn't a checklist.

A quest is a goal the party is working toward: get the residence permit, find an apartment, enroll at Harbor University. Each quest is a note in quests/ with an owner, a status, a checklist of objectives and, optionally, deadlines and progress clocks. Quests are the one kind of note agents may edit directly, through update_quest, so progress shows up without waiting for the night.

## Notes
Anything you write here is yours.
Property Meaning
status active, blocked, done, failed or dormant
owner The party member whose lane it is, as a link
deadline When the whole quest is due (ISO date)
clocks Progress clocks: name, segments, filled, optional deadline
tags Domains, which also decide who has authority over the quest’s facts
relations Usually part_of a campaign; requires and blocks link quests to each other

The curator also renders the clocks as a readable line in a clocks region, like ⏱ Paperwork ■■■□□□ 3/6 · due 2026-10-31.

Statuses

Status Use it when
active Work is under way (the default)
blocked Waiting on something outside the party’s control
dormant Parked on purpose, for later
done Finished
failed Abandoned, or no longer possible

Every quest that isn’t done or failed is listed as active in HANDBOOK.md, with its owner, progress and deadline. When an agent calls onboard, its own quests come first.

Objectives

Objectives are an ordinary markdown checklist inside the note’s objectives region, so there are four ways to tick one:

  • In Obsidian: click the checkbox.
  • On the Quest board: tick it, or untick it if it was marked done by mistake.
  • An agent: update_quest with complete, reopen or add.
  • The curator: when an episode reports progress, often one with kind: task, the sleep marks objectives done or adds new next steps.

Matching is forgiving. Names are compared without case, accents or punctuation, and a partial name works too, so "insurance" finds “Health insurance”. Completing an objective that doesn’t exist adds it, already ticked. add skips objectives that already exist, and reopen ignores names it can’t find.

Clocks

Some progress isn’t a checklist. How close is the lease? How much paperwork is left before the appointment? For that, quests carry clocks, borrowed from Blades in the Dark: a circle cut into segments that you fill as things move.

Paperwork■■■□□□ 3/6due 2026-10-31
Lease signing■■□□ 2/4
Portal access■□□□□□□□ 1/8
  • Segments default to 6. Through update_quest a clock can have 2 to 12.
  • Ticking adds or removes segments (tick: 1, tick: -1) and always stays between empty and full. Shrinking a clock never leaves it overfull.
  • A deadline on a clock turns it into a countdown, and it shows up among the upcoming dates.

On the Quest board, click a segment to fill the clock up to it, or click the last filled segment to empty it. With the keyboard, focus a clock and use the arrow keys.

Deadlines and what’s coming up

Hippocampus collects every date it can find:

  • quest deadlines and clock deadlines;
  • date-like facts on any note, whose field name contains date, deadline, expir, appointment, due, until, start or end and whose value is an ISO date, such as appointment_date on the Migration Agency.

Agents get them in briefing, which looks 30 days ahead by default (horizon_days, up to 365). The dashboard’s Tavern looks 90 days ahead, with how many days are left.

Updating quests as an agent

update_quest is applied directly: no inbox, no sleep. The quest note and HANDBOOK.md are saved at once, as one commit when the vault is on GitHub or on the hosted app.

{
  "quest": "residence-permit",
  "complete": ["online application"],
  "clock": { "name": "Paperwork", "tick": 1 },
  "deadline": "2026-11-30"
}
Argument Effect
status Set the quest’s status
complete / reopen / add Tick, untick, or add objectives
clock name plus any of segments, tick, filled, deadline. An unknown name creates the clock
deadline The quest’s due date
owner Hand the quest to another party member

The note’s updated_by records who made the change. On the hosted app, an agent needs the quest scope to see this tool at all. Edits you make on the Quest board are filed under your own id. More on scopes in Connecting agents.

Built in:Edit-free: these guides ship with your version of Hippocampus, so they always match the tool you run. They describe the tool, never your vault.
